This week too, the starry sky master will bring you starry sky knowledge that you'll want to talk about tomorrow.

This time, we will be talking about Leo, the spring constellation that is also known as the birth sign for those born between July 7rd and August 23nd.

The elegant white star Regulus

Leo is known as a birth sign, and as its name suggests, it is a constellation that resembles a lion.

The landmark of Leo is the first magnitude star Regulus, which shines on the lion's chest. Regulus means "little king," and is an elegant white star that lives up to that meaning.

Leo also has a distinctive arrangement of stars that resembles an upside-down "?" mark that forms a lion's head.
This alignment of stars is called "Leo's Scythe"

The triangle formed by Denebola in Leo, Arcturus in Boötes, and Spica in Virgo, which we looked at this time, is called the Great Spring Triangle and serves as a landmark for finding spring constellations and stars.

The Man-Eating Lion of the Nemean Forest

Leo is an ancient constellation, and it also appears in Greek mythology; the lion is said to be a man-eating lion that lived in the Nemean Forest.
This myth appears in the story of the adventures of the hero Hercules, whose first adventure was slaying the Nemean Lion.

This lion had come to live in the Nemean forest at some point and frequently attacked villagers and travelers.
The troubled villagers prayed to the great god Zeus, who in turn commanded Hercules to slay the lion.
Following his orders, Hercules somehow managed to slay the lion, which then rose into the sky and became the constellation Leo, decorating the spring night sky.

In spring, when the beautiful Leo shines brilliantly, why not gaze at the night sky at Grand Chariot Big Dipper 135° while thinking about the mythology of the constellation? We look forward to seeing you there.
