[Starry Sky Master Newsletter vol.34] Spring Constellations - The Big Dipper

This week too, the starry sky master will bring you starry sky knowledge that you'll want to talk about tomorrow.

This time, we will talk about the spring constellation Ursa Major, which contains the Big Dipper, which is also included in the name of Grand Chariot Big Dipper 135°.

[Ursa Major/Big Dipper]

  • The Big Dipper, your guide to the starry sky

Ursa Major is a large constellation in the northern sky that can be seen all year round, but is highest and easiest to see from spring to summer.
The constellation Ursa Major is famous for its seven stars arranged in a ladle-like shape."Big Dipper"The Big Dipper is easy to find and serves as a guide to the starry sky. The Big Dipper is not a constellation, but is part of the constellation Ursa Major, which corresponds to the bear's lower back and tail.

Since ancient times, Ursa Major has been an important constellation for telling time and seasons, and for finding the North Star.

  • A sad tale of two

According to Greek mythology, Ursa Major is said to be the incarnation of Callisto, a forest nymph.

Callisto was a beautiful woman who served Artemis, the goddess of the moon. When Zeus saw her from heaven, he disguised himself as Artemis and approached Callisto. He took her for himself and gave birth to a beautiful boy.

However, Zeus' wife Hera hated Callisto for giving birth to Zeus' child, and turned her into a giant bear. A dozen years passed, and Callisto's son Arcas became a skilled hunter. One day, Arcas went into the forest and encountered a large bear. Not knowing that the bear was his mother, Arcas drove his spear into the bear, thinking it was a large prey. Just as the spear was about to be driven into the bear, the great god Zeus transformed Arcas into a bear as well, raised him up into the sky, and made him into a constellation. Thus were born the constellations Ursa Major and Ursa Minor.

In spring, when the beautiful Big Dipper shines brilliantly, why not gaze at the night sky at Grand Chariot Big Dipper 135° while thinking about the mythology of the constellation? We look forward to seeing you there.
